The expert: Dennis Gross M.D., founder of 900 5th Dermatology in New York and creator of Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare
The answer: Washing in the shower is definitely better. "The shower is a great time to massage a gentle cleanser into the skin," Gross says. "Deep cleaning the pores becomes easier and more efficient."
The shower acts as a giant steamer, which helps open up your pores. Plus sebum—the oily substance that can cause acne if it gets trapped in your pores—liquefies in the shower.
Gross recommends applying your cleanser on dry skin with dry hands when you first get in the shower, which will make it easier for the cleanser to bind to any dirt and oil molecules. This—plus the pore-opening shower steam—will help give you clean, glowing skin.
