Hi everyone!. I’m very excited to be kicking off a new baby series this month (which will include our nursery makeover). My husband and I recently found out that we are expecting our first (a little girl!), and we are over-the-moon excited. We are high school sweethearts and just celebrated our two-year wedding anniversary, so this is another big step in our relationship. And something that we could hardly even imagine when we first met as teenagers… pretty crazy! First up: some fashion and beauty must-haves for the mama-to-be.
Finding out that you’re having a baby is an incredibly exciting experience. But for a fashion and beauty editor, those nine months are full of minor frustrations too. After years spent figuring out what silhouettesflatter your figure and what skincare products complement your complexion, it’s back to the drawing board. But since I’ve spent the past five months figuring out what works now that I have a bun in the oven, I thought I’d share some of my must-haves with all the other expecting mamas out there. So check out my pregnancy fashion and beauty essentials below. And if you’re not on the baby train yet, be sure to send a link to this post to your pregnant friend or family member!
1. Cute Flats or Slip-On Shoes
To be completely honest, I’ve never been great at standing in heels for long periods of time. But when your belly is a little bigger and your balance feels off, cute flats and slip-on shoes are a must—including some that you can dress up for a night out. Here are three pairs of flats I love right now:
2. Flowy Dresses
My goal is to not buy too many ‘maternity’ pieces that I can never wear again. And since it’s summer, it’s easy to get away with wearing maxi dresses, tunics, and other swingy silhouettes:
3. J. Crew Maternity Minnie Pant, $118
Since none of my jeans fit at this point, investing in at least one pair of maternity pants was a must. Thesematernity ‘Minnie’ pants are the same chic cropped J.Crew pants I had before getting pregnant, but with an elastic waistband. J.Crew makes it so easy since you just order your regular size, and the fit is the same as the non-maternity ‘Minnie’ other than the waist.
4. Storq Bundle
Storq is a brand new maternity line that specializes in basics. You can order items separately, they send you a bundle of all four basics—an LBD, a black pencil skirt, an extra long white tank, and the comfiest leggings you’ve ever worn. They are incredibly soft and comfortable, but sexy and form fitting at the same time. This is a great gift for your fashionable friend who is expecting. I’ve been wearing some of these pieces so much, that I’m honestly considering ordering doubles.
5. Pregnancy Pillow
Getting your beauty rest is a lot harder when you’re expecting. It’s huge and a little ridiculous looking, but my pregnancy pillow is the only thing that can help me sleep through the night these days. You can get aplain white one here, but I recently stumbled across these cute patterned pillows from Bump Nest, which are less of an eyesore and more cute décor.
6. All-Natural Lush Facemasks
You always hear about the beautiful glow that pregnant women get. But what they don’t tell you is that changes in hormones can also lead to breakouts and problem skin like you haven’t experienced since you were a teenager… Since you’re not supposed to use harsh acne treatments like salicylic acid when you’re expecting, I’ve been using Lush’s all natural Cosmetic Warrior mask (with cleansing garlic and tea tree oil) and Grease Lightning spot-treatment. (Eating these acne fighting foods helps too!)
7. Belly Butter
Stretch marks are one of the less glamorous parts of pregnancy. While some women are just more prone to them than others, keeping your bump moisturized can help to lessen or deter stretch marks. I’ve been using Burt’s Bee’s Mama Bee Belly Butter , which is gentle, natural, and nourishing for your skin. Earth Mama Angel Baby also makes a great Stretch Oil to help nourish and encourage your skin’s natural elasticity.
